Here’s a Cajon rhythm uses a brush on the surface of the drum. Aim for a nice sweeping sound on the brush.

I’ve discovered that on my cajon (I built it a few months ago) that my brushes are really effective. Especially since I don’t have any snares on my cajon either.
Sweeping is optional, and I like to kick the side of my cajon for a bass-drum like feel to it. I can get a fairly going rock beat out of it.
