Cajon Building - Stage 3

The next part of my diy cajon project was working out how to get a good snare sound on the drum. I purchased a 12″ snare off the web from Thomann which I planned to string across the drum.

Unfortunately the snare was still a little too long so I ended up screwing one side of the snare into the front frame. Two small strips of wood were then glued to either side to add strength. I then attached the snare string on the other side to a simple homemade tensioning system. For the tensioning system I cut a grove in the side of the drum and then put two small pieces of wood either side with a bolt through the middle.

Snare System

The snare string goes over the top of the drum seated in two small saw cuts and attaches to one of the pieces of wood. To tension the snare you loosen the wing nut and simply pullback and re-tighten.

Nice stuff mate. I’ve been meaning to building one of these (since buying is so dull ;p). I was wondering if you could supply larger images tho, and more maybe. I’ve never ever seen one of these in real life, and I am dependant on the internet to see how they work. sofar, most pages are in some alien language I do not comprehend, so this one is very nice for me. More and bigger pictures would really bring out how it works, and why, making the build that much easier. :) Keep it up :)

Thanks for the comment. I’ll in some more pictures for you. Eventually I’ll put some video together so that you can hear and see it being played.

Hi, I’ll be building my second cajon this week, so I ran into your description while looking for information. One tip: most of the Spanish cajons use a single low E, A or D guitar-string stretched across the inside of the drumming surface for the snare. It is screwed into the structure at the top left (tied with a knot around one of the screws which holds the surface on), passes around the center screw on the bottom and heads up again to the upper right, where it is either simply tensed around a wood-screw which holds it close to the surface or, if more expensive, with a machine-screw which somehow keeps the tension. Often, the guitar-string is rather slack and held to the back of the drumming surface with a strip of duct-tape. You can do this with two strings in order to get more of a snare-effect, and the one I will build now will allow a disengagement of the strings.

Hi - I just finished and published a web page about building a cajon as well. It’s at:
http://caseyconnor.org/cajon
Good to see yours here as well. The web certainly could use more on the subject. :-)
Ok,
